My Students
"Start writing no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." -Louis L'Amour
I want my students to love writing! I want to help them develop the skills they need to give them a voice that will last their entire lives. Having writing tool kits is a good first step.
Our third graders are inquisitive, motivated and a hard working bunch of bilingual students.
They are members of a dual-immersion school in Northern California and value their skills as they develop their literacy in two languages. Over 75% of our students live below the poverty line and are part of the free and reduced lunch program. Despite many challenges they face in their life, they come to school each day ready to learn and eager to show their teachers that they are excited to work hard to develop their skills that they will need in an ever changing global society.
My Project
The materials that we are requesting are to create writing and spelling tool kits that will foster writing, spelling and vocabulary work. For writing, we will have different tubs of writing activities that reinforce specific types of writing that students must learn based on our current units of study and for the new Common Core standards. Examples of this are persuasive writing prompts, personal narratives, and reports on non-fiction topics of personal interest. We will incorporate aspects of writers workshop that will give them additional time to practice and become proficient writers. Our main purpose is to provide daily writing time with choice being a key component. For spelling and vocabulary, we strive to create a rich literate environment that provides essential and often-skipped practice time. Students use letter tiles and magnetic white boards to experiment with spelling patterns, and high-frequency words with hands on activities that are fun and engaging.
These materials will motivate my students during writing and word work.
Providing them guided standards-based choice in what they can write about, will be both engaging and also what they need to learn and master. Playing with words, word patterns, word families, and so on, students hone their knowledge of words and increase their writing skills. The ability to write can have a transformational effect on a person. Let's transform their notebooks into powerful tools for writing and living!
