Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students who are in my classroom live in a very poor area of the inner city. Our school is a Title I school, so all of our students qualify for free lunches. Many of our students come to school with no socks on, because they simply cannot afford them. Keeping these hardships in mind, our students and parents are some of the most wonderful people I have ever worked with.
They are caring and full of life.
For some of my students, I am the only thing that remains constant in their lives. A lot of my students come from shelters or single parent families with lots of siblings. Although my school is a Title I school, I have never felt more loved than I do with the students I teach, or more rewarded.
My Project
My students work at many different levels when it comes to writing. In large class sizes, it is difficult to meet the individual needs of all students during writing time. In order to allow for differentiated instruction during writing time, there are many various activities my students can engage in. These activities will allow myself to give students more individualized attention that directly meet the needs of that student. Centers are also a great way to allow students to interact with one another, and take responsibility of their own learning. Through hands on activities, students will be engaged without working directly with the teacher. Using these materials I will have students engage in letter writing through the use of stamps, and letter activities. I will use sentence building in writing to help students build complete sentences with a subject, and a verb. Students can build their sentences before transferring it to a writing paper. Through the use of the magnetic sentence frames, we will complete mini lessons, such as editing pre-written sentences, or having students come up with their own sentences, and checking for finger spaces, capital letters, and punctuation.
