"The secret of becoming a writer is to write, write, and keep on writing." Ken MacLead An important goal of mine is for my students to hone their writing skills, increase their writing stamina, and to develop a love for writing during their year in my classroom.
I take great pride in teaching fifth grade students at our close knit neighborhood school!
My students are eager to try new things and are helpful to our building's younger aged learners. Many of my students serve on our school's Safety Patrol program that I lead. This awesome program lets our fifth graders assume responsibility and assist with student arrival and dismissal procedures.
Our elementary school is a Title 1 building with close to 60% participation in the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. Our students come to us from varying life experiences. Some of our students are barely aware of life outside of their crowded neighborhood. While other students reside with a single parent at a crisis shelter. In contrast, some students spend a lengthy part of their summer break in their parent's native country visiting and interacting with their extended family. Some of our school families enjoy an annual summer vacation to a location outside of our home state of residence.
My Project
Every year my students have so much to share about their interests, fears, favorites, goals, dilemmas, and experiences. With ever growing class sizes and increasing Common Core demands related to the pacing and rigorous standards, long gone are the days of show and tell time. My students need additional opportunities and materials to successfully communicate and share their interests, goals, experiences, and favorites. I plan on letting my students staple their completed book creations together. This durable and convenient electric staple will be a user-friendly and jam-free tool my students can access and operate. Colored printer paper is not available at our school. Acquiring a variety of colored printer paper will provide motivation to my students. Upon revision and editing of their selected writings, student may choose the color of paper to publish their writings on. Lastly, in order to make their publications durable and capable for showcasing, laminating film is needed.
These writing tools will compliment the writing process that is crucial for my students to not only understand, but to successfully complete!
The electric stapler, variety of colorful copy paper, and supply of needed laminating film will provide encouragement and selection choice to my students. Most importantly, it will give my students much needed methods to express, share, and showcase their writings!
