This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My Pre-K students come from a high poverty community! We are located in the inner city of Baltimore City and have 500 students in our school. Students in Pre-K are at a disadvantage with the amount of math and language arts materials.

Pre-K is the time for students to become engaged in learning and learn how to be creators, explorers, artists, dreamers, scholars, heroes and world changers.

My students are actively engaged everyday in purposeful play to learn about the world around them and how to change it!

My Project

Writing is important to young children before kindergarten because they are already writing. Although their writing may not look like words, their attempts to write are part of the literacy learning process. They are able to become comfortable with the pre-writing or brainstorming, drafting, revising, and publishing.

Many teachers recognize the importance of early writing by making writing materials available in their classrooms and providing opportunities to write during the school day.

The goal is to help children understand how writing works, that it connects in meaningful ways to reading, and that it communicates information, through words and symbols. If these skills are underdeveloped it can lead to frustration and resistance due to the child not being able to produce legible writing or to ‘keep up’ in class due to fatigue. This can then result in poor self esteem and academic performance.

With your help, we can provide many tools in the classroom to allow students to practice their writing. With the help of folders to keep their work organized, pencils and pencil grips to write as well as sentence strips for students to work on writing and sequencing will have students learn to love to write. Students can use the wipe and reuse boards with the dry erase cleaners to practice letter formation, writing CVC words as well as work on making simple sentences. Students will use the clipboards to work around the classroom as well as explore their environment and write about it!
