My students benefit from on-line writing, spelling & reading programs, which I can individualize to meet their needs, but a number of them have limited Internet and/or computer access at home. Having greater access at school with these iPads could help them meet their learning goals
My students come from a range of economic backgrounds.
Some benefit from enrichment at home where parents push academic learning. Others struggle, some in single-parent homes where resources are tight and life is chaotic. But all my parents sincerely want the best education possible for their children, and my job is to provide quality learning opportunities. The students are practically native users of technology and helping them further their computer skills with guided practice will be to their benefit.
My Project
Imagine using the iPad to draft, polish and publish writing. Imagine being able to take a picture or make a short video to include as part of the interactive story, published on a secure site that parents and other classmates can view. Imagine logging in to your personal spelling list to add a word that you've had continual difficulties learning to write correctly and automatically.
The access in the classroom to these portable iPads will give students added flexibility in creativity and work completion. I will be able to sit next to them to conference about their writing and provide individualized focus lessons. The possibilities for student engagement in learning seem almost limitless. I attended a national social studies convention 2 years ago and sat in on an iPad class. The teachers showed how they were using various iPad apps with students. I plan to revisit my notes and contacts to bring some of those interactivity into my classroom, in addition to the online programs we use now.
Currently my classroom has 6 desktop computers, yet I have many, many more students.
Having these two iPads will give more students access to important on-line resources, such as Spelling City, My Access, Lexia CORE5, Accelerated Reader. and IXL grammar work. Please help more of my students have greater access to 21st Century learning tools.
