Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 5th grade students are eager to learn. Every day they show up to do their best. Most of them have been at our school since kindergarten, and most will remain here through eighth grade. Most are English language learners who qualify for free or reduced meals, a few have special needs, and most are reading below grade level.
All my students need practice with writing.
When reading is a struggle so is writing. Our school is part of a small school district situated in a quiet neighborhood in Southern California. Our district recently adopted a new language arts program. There are no funds for materials to support anything extra that might enhance the learning experience for students.
My Project
Since September, I have been telling my students that they are writing a book. Their best written work will be part of it, and they will be able to take it home at the end of the year. They were really happy about that. My students love to write. Right now, the books are imaginary.
I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when their books become real!
I have saved all their work, and they will have a lot of fun revisiting what they've written and creating new, improved work to include in their books. Students will decide what is worthy and will be able to revise pieces as they see fit. Their books will include a variety of writing, such as anecdotes about their lives, opinion pieces, informative writing, narratives, and models/explanations from our science investigations. Pieces will be encased in sheet protectors, and students will design covers for their books. Having their own books will give their writing even more of a purpose. I am excited for them!
