My Students
I have a wonderful group of students in a Title I school. Most of my students are native Spanish speakers and spend half of the day in a Spanish classroom and the other half of the day in an English classroom (my classroom) making them fully bilingual in Spanish and English by 9th grade.
All of my students come from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds.
All of my students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. However, their parents care so much about their success. I spend more time with my students than most of their parents can due to having to work to make ends meet.
My students are a family. They go through the same struggles and face very similar challenges. Most of them have been together since kindergarten and will continue together until high school graduation because of the way our school's dual immersion is set up. My students are "my kids" and I want to do anything and everything I can to help them be successful.
My Project
I teach Dual Immersion First Grade at an amazing Title I school. My students are so eager to learn and come each and every day with a positive attitude and growth mindset. Although they are only 6-7 years old, they are full of curiosity for the world around them.
Our biggest struggle as a class is reading and writing, but STEM activities will make these fun to learn!
We work daily on different writing and reading techniques, but my favorite is using Project Based learning to improve student reading and writing. The Science Stations and Real World Science Kits will help keep the students engaged by having them do different activities, the Create-a-Path will challenge the students to critically think and predict outcomes, and the Engineer a Coaster will help them to see cause and effect. Having STEM activities will make writing more engaging and will make it easier for me to find activities that spark their curiosity. Plus, they will build necessary critical thinking skills while they are at it too!
