My Students

My grade level has decided to departmentalize this year. I am teaching the writing portion and I love to tie in our social studies and science. One thing my students are having a hard time with is dialogue. I would love for my students to be able to tie their history to the 3 forms of writing we do.

Most of my students are about average.

I have noticed that they all seem a little bored when we have to pull out our textbooks, and that is why I am trying to come up with some new ways for teaching my curriculum. Our school is amazing! The students really seem to enjoy being there. One thing we are working on is giving back to our community so that the neighborhood knows that we care, and also so our students feel like they belong and are loved and appreciated.

My Project

With the book Blood on the River, I am hoping that I can tie in a lot of writing goals as well as reading goals. I have a couple of students that are low readers and need the fluency practice by hearing other students read the words while they are following along. I am also going to use this story to tie in my social studies curriculum since American History is a huge part of our curriculum in 5th grade. I tried reading this last year with my students but could only get 8 books. The students loved reading with groups or listening while I read aloud. We created maps and wrote diary entries portraying one of the characters from the story. I am hoping that with a class set I can do more activities like this.

This project will be one way that my students can do the writing and reading goals we want to accomplish, but by also incorporating our history it will have a double purpose.

Most of them will assume we are just learning about Native Americans and colonists, but secretly they will be learning new ways to write and new things to create in our classroom.
