Writing Takes Practice and Feedback

Help me give my students an in-class printer to easily publish their writing and personal journals to get their thoughts down in words.

My Students

My students live in a Utah town in a low-income neighborhood. Hardworking parents often don't have time or don't know how to fully support learning at home. Frequently, the effects of poverty manifest in a child's inability to focus and tune out distractions which are skills needed for learning.

My students love learning and are committed to building a better future through hard work and practice!

Title I schools face the challenges of poverty that other schools do not. Research is documenting the impact that poverty has on education. Nearly 60% of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals. A third are native Spanish speakers. My students need a school that understands their special challenges and intervenes to help.

We are preparing today's students for the jobs of tomorrow. Essentially, we are teaching students the ways to think critically and not just training them on vocational skills. I do not even know what jobs we will need in thirty years, but I do know that they need to read, do the math, think analytically, problem solve, and communicate in writing.

My Project

Fifth Grade is the only elementary grade that has state summative writing exams. When the class begins the year reading on a third grade reading level, I know that in addition to fundamental reading skills, we will need lots of practice and feedback supporting student writing. Research suggests that our brains process and organize better using paper and pencil. Editing and revisions are so much faster when in digital formats.

Improvement in writing comes through frequent, repeated writing.

The more students read, the more they see what sounds good in language, but they need to compose sentences and arrange those sentences into coherent paragraphs in order to excel. Daily writing with regular feedback it part of the process.

Help motivate my students to see their work in print, to edit, and revise and polish their writing. Students are tempted to think the first draft is good enough and it's my job to help them find ways to make it concise, clear, and engaging.
