Writing Systems Fun from Cuneiform Clay to Hieroglyphic Paper

Help me give my students materials they will use to learn about early writing systems to help them understand the relationship between writing and the spread of ideas.

My Project

My sixth graders are amazing students and are learning all about ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. They need to experience some hands on learning, but supplies can be limited and the extra money to do these creative activities falls on the teacher a lot of the time.

This project is a great way for my students to write like ancient Mesopotamia in clay tablets, and like ancient Egypt on papyrus.

They will use the information they have learned about Mesopotamia, Hammurabi's code and the Sumerians to create clay cuneiforms.

They will try using actual cuneiform to convey a message that they plan out. They will also use what they learn about Egyptian government, religion, agriculture and social structure to create documents in hieroglyphics on papyrus. It too, will be a planned message, using actual hieroglyphic symbols.

The plastic tubs will be handy storage tools to keep our supplies organized.
