Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. This year, we are teaching and learning 100% remotely for at least the first semester, which makes establishing strong connections even more critical.
One of the most challenging, yet rewarding, subjects to teach in remote learning is writing.
It may be difficult to see student writing, or to confer with students individually as well as I can in person. However, my students really latch on to writing and do their best work to become better writers. Despite the challenges that exist in our world today and the difficulties that remote learning can create, my students work hard and truly strive to be the best they can be.
My Project
While it's easy to read and work on math at home to improve skills, writing outside of school is essential to becoming a strong writer. Like anything else, practice makes perfect when it comes to writing.
Tools that make writing engaging, exciting, and meaningful are key!
This project will provide at-home writing kits to get my third graders even more excited about writing. Each child will receive a personalized clipboard, allowing them to work on writing for both class and for fun in a wide variety of places at home. Students will also get both white and colored paper to use for writing letters, making cards, or journaling. Additionally, students will receive gel pens to boost engagement even further, because writing suddenly becomes a million times cooler when you are writing with a metallic blue pen!
