I am a fourth grade teacher in an inner-city school within Chicago's south side West Englewood community. Many of my students do not own the necessary supplies to participate in class projects or complete basic homework assignments. It is my hope that someone will be able to help me address this problem. Writing is an important form of communication; not just in school, but also in the workplace, community, and in relationships. I want my students to all have the opportunity to develop and practice writing skills. They should also be able to look back at work and revise it if they so desire. It is important for the students to see the progress they have made over the year, too. To meet these goals each of my students will need a binder and a pack of lined filler paper. This will enable my students to brainstorm, write a rough draft, revise, and publish a final work. They will be able to correct their own work and work together. Finally, they will be able to store their writing for future development or as a memento of where they have been. In other words, my students will be developing their writing portfolios. Students who can see they meeting goals and making progress are much more likely to continue working. Positive reinforcement and a feeling of success can carry people throughout life. The ability to write well serves people in innumerable ways. It is my goal to provide these children with that ability.
