I teach Writing to students residing in the inner city of Atlanta. The overwhelming majority of the students I teach live in poverty. However, in spite of the challenges often associated with low SES, the students arrive at school ready to learn. Due to some academic deficits, the resources provided at the district and local level often fail to meet the needs of my students.
I incorporate technology along with various styles of writing for students to use in all content areas.
This helps support my team of teachers as well as keep the students engaged.
I would like to have resources to expand the learning beyond the basic grammar, sentence structure and report engage them real-life writing experiences.
It is my goal to teach students to write across the curriculum.
Writing is everywhere. Although there are different kinds of writing, my students often get into a rut using the same words and topics repeatedly.
I have found that short, targeted, project-based writing activities increased student engagement which had a positive correlation to student achievement.
Using dictionaries and thesauruses will provide assistance to my students at all levels, experience, and abilities. These tools can help them do their best writing.
The dictionaries will assist students with the precise denotations of words, while a thesaurus can help them capture differences in the connotation of words. Students have to be taught how to use on-line writing resources as well as hardcover resources and keep writing portfolios to perfect their drafts if they are to reach their optimal writing success.
