As a teacher at a low-income school, my world has been completely turned over time and time again. I grew up in the same city where I work but had no idea the challenges children were facing only a few miles down from my high school. The children I work with have been through more than their fair share of challenges by the time they reach my classroom in 6th grade. It's hard to relate to children with such hardships, and even harder to teach students when school is the last thing on their list of things to accomplish.
Teaching with love is my ultimate philosophy-- and these kids need love more than anything.
By the time students at my school are in 6th grade, they're already falling behind their peers at higher socioeconomic schools. There is a very large achievement gap that teachers at my school try to close every day. By using the best resources, putting in hard work, and creating a classroom full of love, I know my students can accomplish anything. My classroom is currently filled with hard work and an abundance of love-- all we need now are the best resources.
My students are in need of mentor texts to support their writing. By using mentor texts, students can learn by example and write with purpose. My students also need an interactive whiteboard for our language study.
Writing resources, including mentor texts and interactive whiteboards, are highly engaging and make effective learning tools.
My students need high-quality children's books at their disposal, including Water Dance and Frederick, both of which are known as unique examples of both word choice and theme.
Our classroom does daily proofreading lessons and we need a dry-erase board specifically dedicated for this purpose. By having a whiteboard for this purpose, students will be engaged in interactive proofreading lessons daily.
