Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the need of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

My students continue learning virtually in Spanish and English. They love learning and they come to our virtual classroom eager to apply their new learning. We have been using whiteboards to write things down during class. Students love learning the letter sounds and letter names in Spanish. We are focusing on reading Spanish syllable and soon, we will be reading and writing words with two or more syllables to make real words. This is where the magic happens in kindergarten, when they put all those letters together to make a word that has meaning! Some students have been doing it already, but they have not made the connections between reading and writing yet.

These journals, will help them keep track of new Spanish words.

We will write the words together during our virtual class. We will add sketches for them to make meaning of the words. We will review all words, and add new ones. This journal will stay at home even when we transition to hybrid learning. Families can support students at home by adding the translation of the words in English and the families home languages. These journals will not only have Spanish words, but they can be turned into multilingual journals by the end of kindergarten.
