My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with a variety of learning needs (ADHD, Autism, Specific Learning Disabilities, Social Emotional Disabilities, Other Health Impairments) who attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. I teach at a Title I school where many of my students participate in the free school lunch program and Backpack Initiative food on the weekends.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
They want to be in school because they want to learn everything they can to be successful in the future.
My Project
Our special education classroom is shared among three teachers and a paraprofessional. At any given time, there are up to three or four instructional groups going on within this small space. With the room being so tight, it is hard not to lose the attention of students - especially students that are already highly distractible. A dry erase divider board would help provide an interactive space for my students to learn.
The dry erase divider will allow me to create a versatile space to meet the changing needs of our classroom.
Unlike wall-mounted whiteboards, this dry-erase board comes with casters, so we can be where we need it, when we need it. It will be able to be moved around the space depending on the size and location of the groups and the instructional task before us.
With only one chalkboard at the front of the room, writing space is at a premium. This dry erase board will give us an unlimited blank slate that also creates intimate or open space possibilities.
In the 21st-century, working collaboratively is a key skill and essential to learning. This project will also help me to embed opportunities for collaboration into our classroom culture. A movable whiteboard will help to create learner-centered work places for a collaborative culture of students at work.
