The students at our school face so much adversity at such a young age, and yet they come to school each day with excitement to learn and grow. Our school has approximately 80% of students receiving free or reduced lunch based on their family income.
Students at our school are not always sure where their next meal will be coming from when they are at home.
School breakfast and lunch are the only two meals that most students know they will receive. Students come to school with tattered clothing, holes in shoes, and many don't have access to weather appropriate clothing.
The community in which our students live has suffered economically in the last few years and it has had a negative impact on what parents can do for their children. The parents partner with the school to try and provide a better life for their children. School is the one place where these students and their families can have hope for a better future.
My Project
I'm looking for a space that students can be engaged with as well as enjoying solving math problems on. Students love being able to write on tables and they love working on the board. Having a whiteboard table would allow them to combine these two things while solving math problems.
This space would be designed for small group lessons with the teacher, as well as a workspace for students in independent work or in a center.
Having a table, such as this, would give students ample room to work out math problems. Students would also be able to easily review and discuss other students work. A whiteboard table would also give space for students to collaborate together to solve math problems. While the space is being designated for math, students could also practice phonics skills such as writing sounds and words.
Not only would this table serve as a great space for students to work, but it would also cut down on the paper used in the classroom. With total costs for educational resources going up, we have to be smarter about how we use the money we do have. Having a whiteboard table would significantly decrease the amount of paper being used. There would be less worksheets, as well as less paper that would need to be used to solve problems or practice phonics skills.
