My Students
I teach middle school science at a Title I school in an urban district. My 6th, 7th and 8th graders come from various backgrounds and have various home situations. I am lucky enough to teach the entire middle school and can confidently say that my students have created a warm and welcoming community all of their own.
My 8th graders can often be found mentoring the younger students in our school, 7th is boisterous and bright, and my 6th graders are always looking for a way to help someone.
My Project
My students and I are lucky enough to have 90 minute blocks together. Less lucky is the fact that we have stools to go with our lab tables. While these stools are easy to move around the room (or tuck under the table) when needed, they leave much to be desired in terms of back support and overall comfort. The stools are normally left behind when students come to the front to take notes (vision issues or a sunny day)- they'd rather sit on the floor.
My students often ask to sit in the hallway (where they can lean against a wall) or to work on the floor (where they can sit criss-cross or lay out) when working on non-lab activities.
Your donations would help my students work more comfortably by providing rugs, padding and portable desks. These items will help reduce the strain on my students backs and help them focus more on their work instead of finding a comfortable way to work.
In our school, most classrooms are partnered and share a "quiet room"- an area to recenter yourself when you need a break. My room is one of the few that does not have a quiet room attached- the second rug would be used to create a mock quiet room by our turtles to give students a sense of separation and relaxation when it's needed.
