Ms. Gilmore from Euclid OH is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need pre-writing letter stamps, magnetic write and wipe board for letters, a class set of magnetic letters, and a trace and write alphabet center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every week my students complete an open-ended journal where they can draw pictures of what is important to them or how they are feeling. They dictate to a teacher what they drew and we help them form letters and words or put their ideas in writing.
My classroom is in a low-income, urban school district.
I have 24 students, 16 of which have special needs. The students range in age from 36 months to 5 years old. Through early intervention my students with special needs are able to get the help they need in order to prepare them for kindergarten.
For some of my students our weekly journal writing is the only opportunity they have to use writing in a creative and therapeutic way. These writing materials will be used in our writing center where students can practice foundational writing skills daily. This daily practice through play will allow students to master skills they will need to write in kindergarten and beyond. Students with fine motor difficulties can use magnetic letters to form their names and meaningful words. Dry erase boards will give students opportunities to practice writing over and over again. A trace-and-write alphabet center will give students opportunities to practice correct letter formation.
Donations to this project will improve our developmentally appropriate classroom by providing high-quality writing materials to students who do not have access to these otherwise.
Giving students these open-ended materials will give them opportunities to practice writing, build their confidence, and engage creatively within the classroom.
