My Students

My school is in a low income, urban area and students are diverse in many ways, including ethnically and economically. The Kindergarten through second-grade students who attend my early intervention program in our Learning Center have been identified as at-risk of failing in reading and writing. Many of these students struggle to stay focused and struggle with more complex tasks such as writing.

The students that attend my Learning Center are eager to learn but required very explicit and intentional instruction.

Therefore, I am required to use resources that grab their attention and simplify the instruction in a different way so that they are successful. My program is a gateway before special education, so many of these students display various forms of learning challenges and they respond well to the use of visuals such as graphic organizers and charts. I believe that with the right resources and support these students will be successful in reading and writing.

My Project

Learning to write can be an overwhelming challenge for young struggling students. Visuals charts such as these colorful posters help students become better readers and writers! With vivid colors, write and wipe-off abilities and tons of helpful information, the posters can be displayed as useful resources all year long.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in their writing.

The first set of charts helps students develop the skills they need to write in 8 essential styles...with jumbo teaching charts that help them organize their thoughts—before they start writing! The 8 write & wipe charts each have a different graphic organizer that can be used with any writing topic. I just stick a chart onto a magnetic surface, then work with students to fill it in as we discuss the main idea, supporting details, story elements and more. The guide even has reproducible versions of each chart for independent practice! These charts help students to develop skills in the writing process, using graphic organizers, brainstorming, pre-writing techniques and adding details to writing.

The second set of charts reinforces language skills—from parts of speech to descriptive writing. I can't wait to see the improvement in my students writing!
