Help me give my students opportunities to build up their language arts skills, especially in writing. Alaska is focusing on the science of reading and students connecting their understanding of reading to their own writing.
Without a strong understanding and mastery of reading and writing skills, it shows in all other academic areas. A focus on the science of reading and tools that will help students make the gains they need after the two+ years of students of little to no practice in these skills at home. This is not new to me after 19 years of teaching, but more apparent than ever before. I have students in third grade who lack fine motor skills for writing, still working on phonemic awareness, and phonics, comprehension, fluency/accuracy, and vocabulary at least 1 year behind. They are reluctant writers. Unsure and lacking the opportunities to write with modeling. More importantly, how reading and writing impact other academic areas. We must build up their skills and confidence! I would greatly appreciate the support in providing these visuals and personal resource materials to help our grade level and others I support as a senior ranking teacher at my school. I believe providing such materials will address this need and concern. Please help our students strive to achieve their goals!
