Help me give my students the supplies needed to complete next year's writing projects. I love to integrate writing into our novel units, and they need ink, paper, markers, and colored in order to facilitate their finished products.
I teach in a tight-knit, rural community in southern Georgia. Many of our students live in generational poverty. This number is so high that 88% of our student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch. In fact, many of them will be the first in their family to graduate high school or go to college. As teachers we know that education is the key to helping them rise above comfortable norms to reach their full potential.
Teaching all of our reading, language, and writing standards through engaging, thought-provoking novels not only teaches students the curriculum, but gives them enduring understanding and (hopefully) makes them lifelong learners.
To that end, we incorporate many writing projects with our novel units, and those projects require supplies. Our school can provide some of them, but it cannot afford to provide them all.
My Project
I am passionate about helping my 6th grade students become excellent writers. Writing products tap into a part of students' understanding of a topic more thoroughly than anything else I can ask them to do. I've seen more instances than I can count when students didn't even know what excellent thoughts they had in them until they were able to see those thoughts on paper.
The only downside to seeing their beautiful thoughts in print is that the act of printing requires paper, ink, and, in many cases, art supplies that our school can't afford to provide.
This project will help bridge the gap between our budget and their brilliant products. Please help me facilitate enduring understanding of our curriculum through the writing process. Who knows? The next JK Rowling or Mark Twain may be among these precious souls I've been entrusted to teach. Thank you!
