This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
First Graders love to learn, and especially love hands-on materials!
My students come to school ready to learn, and excited about each day!
Our school is committed to helping students learn to the best of their abilities. Many of my students come from homes where they have little to no access to learning materials. They are very excited to have their own items to use in the classroom, including whiteboards!
My Project
Writing and Reading are very strongly connected. In first grade, we work a lot on handwriting and phonics. Using whiteboards and magnetic letters are a wonderful way to help students gain the necessary skills while encouraging hands-on learning. Whiteboards and magnetic letters are a wonderful way to enhance the writing process, and for many students, a way to make writing fun! Students will each have their own personal whiteboard kept in their desk for writing and word practice. We will also use the whiteboards in whole group. This provides me with immediate feedback and the ability to immediately check for understanding. The magnetic letters and whiteboards will be set up as part of my Literacy Centers. While I meet with small groups of students to work on reading, the other students will rotate through literacy centers, including the magnetic letters and whiteboards. These will be used along with our reading and language arts program daily.
Donations of whiteboards will improve my classroom by providing hands-on learning while working on handwriting and phonics skills.
Many students struggle with traditional paper and pencil writing, and while this skill is still important, having a whiteboard to write on can be very motivating! It also helps us save on paper, as students can not only work on writing independently, but use them in whole group.
