This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love reading and writing with me in one-on-one lessons and in small groups. Early writing can be made fun in center time. They need journals that do not have lines. They need letter and word activities that can help create more meaningful writing times in their journals!
My students come to school hungry to learn, but often hungry themselves.
They come from a inner city area. 100% of my students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. They come to work with me in my classroom because they have been identified as a below average reader and writer. The activities we do in one-on-one lessons, or in small groups, all focus on letters, words, reading text on their level, and writing.
My Project
The letter and word games will be used in small group or center times. This will build their knowledge of letters and words quickly. This will bridge over to their writing center. The journals give each student their own journal that they keep and write in daily. The sentence strips are used in small groups. I write their stories that they wrote in their journals and cut between each word, then mix it up. They then have to search for the first sounds and reassemble their stories. They often ask to take their puzzles home and do them as homework with their parents. The markers are used at a dry erase center where they practice writing the new words they have learned or sometimes practice the letter formation of letters they may struggle with. Using different colored markers makes this seem fun to them rather than a chore.
All of the letter and word work help build their journal writing time.
The containers help organize different center areas so supplies are always in their place. Students know what to work on and where to get their supplies. These centers help create excitement for learning new letters and words. They help build strong early writing skills.
