My Students
All of my students love learning but their ability levels vary greatly. I have a class of 20, with a few students who receive special education services. Their diverse backgrounds include some with regular exposure to books and others with little to no "out of the classroom" experience. The majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school with over 90% of the population being low income. We also have a large foster care population.
The school is a public school in an urban community.
Recently, the school district suffered a deficit and all of its schools suffered a financial loss, including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons, and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year.
My Project
My students love writing! My second graders love to write stories and share them with the class. Writing is a major subject in our curriculum. Topics include opinion writing, how-to, and narrative writing. My students could really benefit from the "Ready to Write" prompt box. With over 100 prompts, that cover narrative, informative/explanatory, and opinion/argument writing, it's perfect for independent writing and a writing center. The cards feature step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow writing prompts, so my students can complete the writing activities on their own.
The "Sequence & Write Story Tiles" will help my students practice sequence of events.
They get to use the pictures to write their own story step-by-step which will help them tap into their creativity. These items would help me incorporate fun and engaging writing activities into our center time. For example, activities like silly sentences, finishing the sentence, and writing "rainbow sentences" using different color sentence strips make writing fun. We just need your help in purchasing the materials to make all of this possible.
