Writing Beyond Crayons and Pencils

My students need 9 gallons of paint, watercolor paints, brushes, texture mits and brushes, sponge paint designs, aprons, glitter painters, paint caddies and a drying rack to help them become authentic authors and illustrators of their writing.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 25 kindergartners that attend school all day and about 90% of them receive free or reduced lunch. They come from homes where not many extra opportunities are provided. Some have not held crayons, scissors or pencils.

I want kids to write stories like real authors and illustrators EVERYDAY -- using multiple mediums to accomplish this. Most children's book illustrations utilize painting rather then crayons. When my kids paint, they smile and it helps to make writing fun. They always ask "are we writing and painting today" often I say yes, but painting each day requires lots of paint for 25 kids, 180 days per year. My classroom is supplied with crayons, pencils and paper for writing. I have some basic paintbrushes that I purchased out of my pocket last year and a few bottles of paint, but these will run out shortly.

In order for painting to be a consistent activity in my kindergarten classroom I need help with supplies. My kids need several types of paint and a variety of tools to paint with that help them create what they see in their favorite books.
