I teach in the city of resilience that is Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is one of the most poverty-stricken cities in our nation. The students in my school face many challenges at home and in their community, which influences their attitude before they even walk in the door.
No amount of blight, unreliable public transportation, or pothole infested roads, stop our students and their families from moving forward.
Determination like this reminds us to be connected with the reality of our students and to reach them to teach them.
Writing in kindergarten is science in itself. There are many fine-motor, phonics, and reading skills that students have to master to produce quality kindergarten writing products.
The materials for the project, writing across the curriculum, will support my students throughout their journey of becoming scientists, mathematicians, and most importantly, writers!
To ensure students are prepared to take on 1st-grade math and science at the end of the school year, students must be able to explain their thinking through speaking and writing. To ensure my students have the proper resources to be successful. Crayons and writing pencils are essential tools needed when learning how to form letters, write sentences, and create quality writing pieces. Primary writing journals will be used to display their writing skills by capturing their understanding of plants, animals, and other science topics. As well as through the creation of graphs and math drawings. The primary writing journals also serve as a writing portfolio, which will showcase each student's progress in writing.
Writing is a necessary skill needed to be successful throughout elementary school and life. Infusing math and science with writing is a sure way to make STEM skills stick for a lifetime.
