My students need pens, highlighters, pencils and other supplies to be active participants in a writer's workshop. Through the writing process students draft, highlight, edit and revise.
Writing is an area that many of my students have no interest in. They often feel that they are not good at writing and dread having to start a new essay. It is my goal to build their confidence and help them to realize they have great, important things to say. I want to help them find their voice.
My students are typical middle school students.
However, a high- population of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Often they have things going on at home that distract them from their school work. Coming to school is a safe place where they are fed and supported.
My Project
These resources will allow my students to participate in a writer's workshop. The materials will be put together in a writer's kit for each group of students. Students may access the materials as needed. Through the writing process students draft their ideas and then use the highlighters to color code the different parts of their essay. This allows students to check their work to make sure they have included all necessary parts of their writing. It also provides a visual to see what the components of an essay are. Then they are expected to edit their writing using the purple pen to prepare for their final drafts.
These materials will help students to grow and become life-long writers.
Writing is an area in which every job requires some form of writing. The skills they learn in middle school are the basics of what they will need to know though out life. In class they will develop the skills needed to take them into high school, college, and into their careers.
