Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ask any of my students and they'll tell you with the confidence and enthusiasm of an emergent writer that, "If you can think it, you can say it. If you can say it, you can write it." Now we need your help to get the supplies to do it!

I have the honor of teaching 24 talented, innately curious and enthusiastic kindergartners!

My students attend a language immersion public school in an urban and struggling school district. They are culturally and linguistically diverse, and have experienced more upheaval and trauma than any child should. Statistically only 1:10 of my students will attend college, but come into my classroom and you will find 24 of the most intelligent, inspiring and capable young minds. My students astound me with their tenacity, strength, perseverance and unquenchable thirst for knowledge. They have stories to tell and voices to be heard; let's give them the supplies so that we can listen.

My Project

My students are becoming autores y ilustradores in their second language (Spanish)! These resources will allow us to fully implement Writer's Workshop, a highly effective and well researched method of teaching writing. Writer's Workshop is a holistic approach to teaching writing that fosters a love for writing and a deep appreciation for students' stories and published work. Right now we are using computer paper stapled together and the worn out markers and crayons we have in the classroom. What message does that send? These new writing supplies would convey to students that their work is important and that their writing is valued. The multi-cultural colored pencils are especially important so that my students are able to draw an accurate picture of themselves and never have to utter "but teacher they don't have my color." These resources would allow us to create a fully stocked writing center with high quality materials to reflect the high quality work my students produce.

My students are invested in writing and are eager to share their stories!

Your donation will help provide my students with an outlet to express themselves and the opportunity to develop and refine critical writing abilities. Kindergarten is crucial, it's my students' first formal school experience. Let's show them that their stories have value, that writing is fun, and expose them to the power of words. Your donation will help give them a voice and the tools to express their inspiring stories.
