I teach English to high school students with special needs on the west side of Chicago. My students struggle with reading and writing. Writer's Workshop has been a fabulous way to get them motivated and excited about writing. In Writer's Workshop, students write in authentic ways about topics that matter to them. They acquire the skills they need while getting a chance to express themselves.
One of the most important components of Writer's Workshop is modeling - where the teacher shows the students what to do by going through the writing process with her own writing. To do this, I keep a writer's notebook just like my students do, and revise and edit my work in front of them; my writing must be projected for this to be effective. My school has no overhead projectors; a digital presenter is even better than an overhead because it does not require transparencies, but projects from any paper or book! This will allow the students to watch me draft, revise, and edit my work, so they have an understanding of the writing process and the specific skills they are learning. I will also use the digital presenter to help my students learn and practice critical reading skills that they need.
In addition, the students will use the digital presenter to share their work with each other, to give presentations to the class, and to work collaboratively on various reading and writing projects.
