Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to learn! Every day, they come to school ready to ask questions, explore new ideas, and do their best. Most of our students qualify for free lunch, so families are not able to provide the school with extra financial support.
Kindergartners learn best through hands-on, integrated experiences.
This is especially important for my students who are English language learners. They have to master academic concepts and a new language at the same time! It's important that these students have lots of time to practice their new language so they can share what they've learned.
My Project
At school we take out special materials when we begin writers workshop. Students write with flair pens, practice how many pages they will need and staple/tape their books together. This builds independence and reinforces that students are authors, in charge of their own writing.
Having all the materials writers needs at home makes this work more engaging and authentic.
Flair pens create nice dark lines on the paper, even if students are still building their fine motor muscles. We use pens so that we don't erase our mistakes, we want to learn from them! By seeing where we crossed something out and change it, we have a record of our writing process and can see how we grew as a writers. We use different colored pens so that we can see where we went back to our work and added more writing!
