In order to implement my project my students need Weekly Readers to provide a link with the world and the rest of the supplies, i.e., crayons, picture story paper, stickers, markers, blank books, poster paint, and tag board, are necessary to have a successful experience in the Writers Workshop to pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and publish their responses about their world to their world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in Hammond, IN. The majority of my students are Hispanic, 5% are African American and 1% are White. They live in a low socioeconomic community. The students score below the norm on the state achievement assessment in writing. The students need many opportunities to bolster their ability to write.
Writing instruction, a school-wide goal, is very important in my classroom. The Writers Workshop is a one hour block of time in which my students receive writing instruction. During Writers Workshop the students learn process writing, which takes them from the pre-writing stage, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing their written pieces. They learn how to write in different genres, such as narrative, persuasive, and expository. The Writers Workshop is composed of several parts: large group mini lessons about the writing topic of the day for 10 minutes, 40 minutes of individual writing time which includes small group sessions and individual student conferences with the teacher, and finally sharing with the whole group for the last 10 minutes.
The Writers Workshop involves the use of many materials, not provided by the school, that are crucial for a successful program. The materials requested in this grant proposal will facilitate the students' writing improvement. To create the optimal learning environment for the Writers Workshop many posters about process writing and genres are to be displayed. The tag board will allow the students to create the posters, fostering their personal involvement. The tag board will also be used for small group projects and to create large books to read to younger students. The blank books are for their original writing for the class library. The art supplies, such as story paper, poster paints, markers, and crayons, are for illustrations about their writing. The Weekly Readers will provide regular background knowledge about the world, which will supply a multitude of ideas in which the students can respond to in writing. The stickers are for motivational purposes to celebrate success in the Writing Workshop.
The Writers Workshop, equipped with the materials requested, will provide the learning environment necessary to improve my students' writing development. When the students' learning is mediated with responsive writing instruction, the children's achievement in their personal writing as well as on the various assessments they will have during their school careers will be positively influenced.
