I am a 4th grade teacher in an urban elementary school. My students are by in large Hispanic, with one or two white or black children. The area surrounding the school is impoverished and crime-laden. To succeed in such a hostile environment the students require engaging learning experiences. They must overcome huge obstacles in order to improve their achievement on state tests and in life in general, despite their language and poverty issues.
