Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom are vibrant, amusing individuals. They have life experiences that have developed in them a special kind of grit that can be difficult to come by and they have personalities and senses of humor that create a lot of fun in class. I am very proud of the fact that I have a multitude of races, religions, and cultural groups represented within the walls of my classroom and we all co-exist peacefully.

That said, many of my students come from low-income, high-risk backgrounds.

My students need and deserve materials and support that are fit to who they are. The first step in making this happen is to bring in multicultural literature that is relevant to them.

My Project

Students learn to write well when they have strong examples of writing placed before them. Each of these texts come recommended by Ruth Culham in her resource, "The Writing Thief". Each book is carefully selected to model specific traits and skills that make good writers.

Some of the best mentors come in the form of books.

Mentor texts have come to be known as a very effective means of modeling essential writing skills for students. Students will read the books through the lens of standards-based writing skills. Once they learn to evaluate mentor texts and evaluate them for special skills, they have a solid, working understanding of what good writing looks like. This arms them with the knowledge needed to then produce their own great writing.
