Many of my students come from low-income, high-risk backgrounds. I have students who are in foster homes, who have parents in prison, who are or have been homeless, who have had encounters with the legal system, who will be first generation graduates, and who have big dreams. New standards have left classrooms empty of materials and I have worked hard to close this gap by finding materials which meet the standards but, more importantly, reach my students through cultural relevance, historical interest, dynamic characters which teach lessons, and rich literary stories which create understanding and empathy.
