My Project
Each year, I host a personal narrative workshop that allows students to write stories that reflect their identities.
Their stories encapsulate me as they allow me to get to know my students while having a peek at the struggles and inner turmoil that they face in their daily lives.
The notebooks allow my scholars to brainstorm and jot down any thoughts they may have and the pencils allow my students to go straight to work as they often forget to come to class with a pencil. I know in conducting this writers' workshop that I am not only building future authors, but I'm also building my students' confidence.
Additionally, one set of the notebooks I requested, showcases the beauty of black teens. Our first unit is on identity & I want my scholars to be proud of who they are and I want them to see themselves represented in a positive light.
Many of my students come in at the beginning of the year and believe that their stories are not important, but by the end of this unit, they are able to pick up a pencil and tell their stories or the stories of the people that surround them like Shakespeare once did.
