Hello! I am a first grade teacher in Durham County, North Carolina. I love my job and I love my kids! Everyday I try to find ways to make school even more enjoyable for them than the day before. It is so important to keep their love of learning alive!
I love teaching writing to first graders! They are so excited about what they are learning and I love to hear the stories they have to share. Every once in a while though they just get stuck! They've written about their families, friends, and what they did this weekend, and aren't sure what to write about next. Help Yourself Writing Rings are prompts divided into four categories: Perilous Problems (The Ferris wheel stops working while people are at the top), Terrific Titles (Bubble Gum on My Shoe), Spectacular Settings (At a beach with big waves), and Captivating Characters (A caterpillar that doesn't want to be a butterfly). Pulling out one of these prompts will give great ideas to even the writer with the worst writer's block!
I would also like to add a writing center to our room. This would be a place where students can go to get new books to make, art supplies to create their illustrations, and extra pencils or paper when they need them. I believe having a special writing center would help keep my students excitement about writing fresh and keep the ideas flowing!
