Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students know that writing helps them learn about language, spelling,and self expression. It is the key to education. When I asked my students why we need new writing materials, they said," We are a poor school that needs lots of materials to learn better".
My students come from a low-income neighborhood.
many of them have few resources at home and our school provides them with many activities for writing and expressing their thoughts. Mast of these children are second language learners and writing is a challenge for them due to their limited knowledge of the English language. Using creative writing ideas such as poetry and becoming pen pals with each other by writing friendly letters adds to their mastery of the State Standards. They love to share stories with other classes and their families as well, and by using the "Writing Process" they will become more proficient writers. Many of my students are also second language learners who have recently "exited" from the bilingual program. Writing skills are in the early stages of development for many of my students and these new portfolios will assist the children is seeing their own growth.
My Project
My students love to write stories and letters to each other and they need writing materials to improve this process. Having new writing tools such as pocket portfolios, quality erasers, an electric pencil sharpener and a sentence writing center will assist in this process. At the present time, our school has very few resources to fund any projects. My second grade students need these materials now so that they can be used to improve their writing and achieve state writing standards while they are in second grade so that they are able to continue learning more difficult writing which will prepare them for third grade. In addition, by having a way to organize their portfolios, the children will become more independent writers. They will use these portfolios to keep all of their assignments to see their growth throughout the year. These are life long skills which will be embedded into their long term learning goals to take them on to High school, and eventually college.

My students have the love of learning and writing, but they need new writing materials to achieve their goals of becoming stronger writers. The ability to write and express oneself is a necessary part of any education. Early literacy skills are needed to support higher levels of learning. I know that these materials will become part of our daily instructional program.
