Have you ever been faced with a school project that is daunting? Many of my students face this each and every day that they come to school. These children face a variety of learning challenges. Instilling a love of reading in my students has become my first and foremost objective.
I've heard many of my students say, "I hate reading" because they haven't found the right type of book.
Creating excited readers is so fulfilling to me. I know that once my students learn to love reading, they will be lifelong learners.
My Project
By giving students white boards, they take control of their own learning. Teachers can easily see which students are struggling and which ones are ready for more of a challenge. Hands on learning promotes student involvement and interest. Using the colorful markers keeps student interest level high. In our Language Arts curriculum, students do quite a bit of reading and writing responses. Using white boards is a fun way for students to do that. For example, when studying figurative language, calling out something like "Idiom" and having the students write and draw an example keeps the entire class involved in the learning process.
