Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher at a fantastic urban Los Angeles elementary school. My students are all English Language Learners from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are amazing children with a passion to learn.

However, learning how to write can be a daunting task for a six year old. They often have a difficult time choosing a topic to write about and almost always have problems spelling words. The whole process can be quite frustrating when all they want to do is tell you about their family or a favorite birthday.

My students need a way to get excited about writing. They need materials that are conducive to making mistakes and taking risks in their writing. Individual white boards and markers are the perfect solution! My students will be able to use these during Writer's Workshop and their free choice time. They will be able to tackle the spelling of difficult words without wasting paper or ruining their own paper with messy eraser marks. I will also be able to use these boards during small group instruction and other activities throughout the day.

Students are often "turned off" of writing at an early age. However, with your help, my students will be more motivated to make their voices heard. They will enjoy the process of writing and become lifelong lovers of the written word. Who knows, your thoughtfulness may even spark the fire under the next great American writer!
