This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a small, public, elementary school dedicated to providing self-contained special education instruction to students with multiple disabilities. In my classroom of second and third graders, there is a wide range of academic skills and abilities.
Writing can be difficult for my students and all of my students are at different places in writing.
Some students need support writing letters and numbers, while some students need support writing sentences. Most of my students show frustration when they are writing.
My Project
During distance learning, students are getting a lot of opportunities to do writing activities on the computer. While typing is great, I don't want my students to lose opportunities to do physical writing activities, especially since it is an area where I see frustration amongst my students.
The materials requested will help my students access physical writing opportunities at their level as writers.
Different books and paper materials would be used with different students to support their needs. Students may be working on number and letter formation, writing sight words, activities to support writing in complete sentences, or correcting capitalization and punctuation in a sentence. Pencils are a given for writing, but I also want to give my students the ability to be creative, so markers are also included. Write and wipe markers and display trays will be used to work on word building.
These materials will support their needs at home during distance learning and give them the materials they need to continue to grow as writers. I also included timers and a pencil case. The timers will serve to support students who become frustrated during writing. It will allow me to give students a visual time limit for their writing and can also be used if a student needs to take a break. The pencil case will help keep the student materials organized so they are prepared for writing.
