I am responsible for teaching Literacy and Writing to grades 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8. Our school is a pre-kindergarten to eighth grade school with about 86% of the students receiving free lunch.
I am in the process of creating a Writing Lab where students can feel free to express themselves through writing. Approximately 75 - 100 students will use the lab daily. I have the room set up in centers. There is a reading center, writing(drafting) center, editing & proofreading center, illustration(art)center and the author's corner. The students move from center to center as they need to.
Having centers for writing allows the students to have the opportunity to learn writing as a process. So often we teach the students how to write for the test but they miss out on experiencing writing for enjoyment. The students will learn the writing process as they use each center. I am hoping to create lifelong writers and authors among our students.
