Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher at a fabulous urban Los Angeles elementary school. Most of my students are English Language Learners from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Several of them are in a Special Education class and spend half of the day with us. They are all amazing children with a passion to learn and a strong desire to do better.

However, learning how to write can be quite overwhelming for a six year old. Everyday they face a "spelling battle". They waste valuable time crossing out incorrect spellings and erasing misspelled words. The whole process can be quite frustrating when all they want to do is tell you about their dog or their birthday party.

My students need something that will help them feel more comfortable about spelling. They need materials that are conducive to making mistakes and taking risks in their writing. Individual white boards and markers are the perfect solution! My students will be able to use these during Writer's Workshop and their free choice time. They will be able to tackle the spelling of difficult words without wasting paper or ruining their own paper.
