My Students

My students are vibrant, challenging, inquisitive and loving children doing the best that they can on any given day. They are full of smiles, cheer and have personalities that will melt your heart. They come from low income homes but have hearts filled with love and hope. They deserve everything that I can give them and then some. Many of them experience life's daily struggles and have difficulty coming to school. They are only four and five years old and for many this is their first time in a school setting. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch. We have the highest rate of ELL's (English Language Learners) in the state, and have a high amount of special education students. My class has students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. They deserve to have a great first year of school!

My Project

The use of an easel is almost a daily activity in my classroom. During morning message time, the students come to the rug and sit on their assigned colored space. We read a different message each day. Students also come up to the board and circle sight words and punctuation. Having an easel at their level would make it much easier for all students to participate. My students also need extra chart paper for easy viewing, since I am always writing on chart paper and have nowhere to place it. My children love to listen and interact with stories. We use many big books in our whole group reading lessons and during centers. Big books are great because of the large print and large letters. With a class of 23 children the easel would make it possible for all of the children to see and interact with print. It is difficult to hold a big book in a way that enables all children to see. With the help from an easel the children would be able to see the words and pictures better. Also, it would be easier on me because I would not have to wrestle with a large book in hand. An easel would also make it possible for my children to interact with print during a read-aloud lesson. The children would be able to sit more comfortably because they would be at eye level with the easel.

The easel would be a great asset to our writing and reading program.

It has been something that we have needed for a some time. Please assist us with a teaching and learning tool that would have a positive impact on learning.
