Write On! Creating a Safe Place to Write This Fall

Help me give my students a productive, safe, and sanitary year with Writer's Notebooks (for daily writing practice and mentoring) and a notebook cubby/mail slot (with an individual space for each student's belongings).

My Students

My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.

This is the year we write, write, WRITE!

When I found myself unexpectedly giving online classes last spring due to COVID-19, I realized that the assignments that invited the most meaningful teacher-student dialogue were those that involved creative writing. Giving my students more time to engage in meaningful writing this year will be a useful way to help my students learn, process their thoughts and emotions, and build a meaningful relationship with the teacher as their writing coach.

My Project

I plan to give my students time to read independently and write in their notebooks every day. Because each student will have an assigned "cubby" for his/her notebook, the students will feel a greater sense of ownership in the classroom. It will be very easy for students to find their notebooks each day, and they will be able to return their notebooks (in these times of COVID-19) without worrying about other students having touched their property. A few of my students will be opting to complete their classwork at home this fall due to health concerns, and they will be offered a notebook for home use; this gift will give them a tangible link to our classroom and help them feel a little less far away. Your donation will help my students to feel safer and more stable despite these current crazy times!
