My Students
We've all heard of Julius Caesar, but what exactly did he do and why do we still care? My students can read Latin, but they still need help understanding who he was, what he did, and why he did it.
My students are mostly inner city kids who have an amazingly high aptitude for learning.
We consistently rank in the top five of public schools in our state even though we are in fact the lowest funded school in our district.
My students make do with very old texts, the same old texts that I used when I was a teenager in the same school. These paperbacks will serve as a classroom set and will be used by 150 students this year and every year hereafter.
My Project
These books are Caesar's firsthand account of his historic conquest of Gaul. More important than the history is Caesar's contributions to modern writing.
Caesar invented the topic sentence. My students will become better writers for having read these books.
Caesar tweeted and posted on walls thousands of years prior to today's technology. Caesar gave regular (short) updates to Rome on his progress. His accounts were then posted on the walls of the Roman Forum for all the citizens to read.
Far from being dusty and distant, these books will show my students that the past is still with us today and is still worth studying.
As mentioned earlier, my students are inner city kids.
Most are first generation Americans and many live below the poverty line. The best hope for my students is a good education. But perhaps more importantly, they need to earn scholarships in order to afford college at all. Mastery of Latin will go a long way in helping them succeed.
I thank you for your support, kindness, and generosity.
