Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish Immersion Program, which was adopted more than 12 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

My students will start kindergarten this year in person. They will start their schooling learning in two languages, Spanish and English.

These Spanish journals will help my students write down the words they are learning in kindergarten.

These journals will be used weekly and students will have access to them all the time. They can use them as a reference when writing things down, it can be a great tool to practice handwriting, and they can practice reading the words too. The magnetic holder will help display the weekly words on our classroom whiteboard as a reference and they will be updated when new words are introduced.

Students will be able to keep and take home their Spanish journals at the end of the school year as a celebration of what they were able to accomplish in kindergarten. By supporting this project, you are supporting students who will be graduating bilingual and biliterate.
