Write (and Build) All About It!

My students need materials to build and write words without spending time handing out or looking for materials. These will be kept right in the seat sacks so that all the time will be used for instruction.

My Students

"I wrote that the cat was sleepy!" said one of my students, in response to a comprehension question. Although my class is representative of many cultures and ethnicities, they all are creative, and have discovered a love of reading and writing. They write to communicate feelings, to tell the facts, and to share encouragement with family and friends. They are using their knowledge of letter sounds to build these words, and love doing so multiple times throughout the day. They love getting their ideas across to their readers so that they are understood.

My Project

Having the ability to manipulate magnetic letters to build word families, consonant vowel consonant words, change beginning and ending sounds, as well as vowels, and write all of these, is an integral part of our small group daily reading instruction rotations. Students learn to build and write sight words, work on vowels, blends and cvc words all using these materials daily. They work on objectives to learn both words through their phonetic sounds as well as rules. They write and remember as well as build (and have developmental fun!) to create meaningful connections and ultimately add these words to their reading and writing banks.
