I teach in middle school, and my students are an active group of kids who don't often get the chance to release all their energy during recess. I often feel terrible that we require our students to sit for so long and that they are unable get the same amount of time to stretch, run, and unwind during the school day.
Running, jumping, laughing, and joking are natural for children; why wouldn't I want to encourage this?
I hope to do this with this project! Throughout the day, they have to sit and learn. Why not allow them the opportunity to release energy, frustration, and have a good time all the while learning a new skill that can take them far?
The wrestling mat is needed for two separate initiatives. The first is a competitive wrestling team. The second is an ongoing course in young ladies self defense.
Due to a lack of funding and our school being relatively new, our students don't have enough opportunities to compete in organized athletics.
Many of out students have asked if we could have a wrestling team. I'm trying my best to make this happen because of my experience coaching wrestling and the sport's affordability. I've witnessed dozens of athletes on my wrestling teams develop focus, confidence, and persistence by pushing themselves every day. The lessons from the mat translate seamlessly into the classroom and life.
The mats will also be used to teach young ladies basic self defense. Students will learn escapes and sweeps from various positions and take-downs. The aim of the self-defense course is to instill confidence in young women by equipping them with the knowledge and instincts to defend themselves dangerous situations.
The donations given will allow multipurpose usage in our school and expose our students to new skills and possibly opportunities for college and life.
