Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach special education US History for my incredibly diverse population of students. This group of young people work incredibly hard despite their challenges. Their eyes light up when they figure something out and they are excited when they learn new things.
Most of my students are receiving free lunch, meaning they live at or below poverty level; many have parents who speak a foreign language at home and are first generation citizens.
Because of their diversity, it is important that we work together to create a cohesive classroom.
I teach at the largest high school in my state. With over 3,500 students, we are across 2 campuses and have the opportunity to give the students a wide variety of electives and sports opportunities.
I am also the coach of the High School Varsity wrestling team as well as a strength and conditioning mentor. I work with the various sports teams in the weight room all year and coach wrestling in the winter season. We have 30 wrestlers and over 600 varsity athletes in our school who use the weight room.
My Project
I am working with my other coach colleague to get enough bags for all of the students. Our wrestlers are incredibly hard working, as are their parents and their families. Many of my wrestlers cannot afford a nice, athletic wrestling bag to hold all of their wrestling supplies. This particular bag has 2 parts, a dry section in the back and a mesh section in the front. The mesh section is specifically designed for the wrestlers to put their dirty uniforms, socks, etc. after practice so that the bag does not become smelly. The dry section can contain phones, toiletries, etc. There is also a hook on the outside for their headgear.
This project is for 5 wrestling athletic bags for our team members so that they look and feel like a team; a major part of feeling like a family is having a full team uniform.
We have a significant amount of equipment and uniforms that the team needs to bring with them each day and having a team set of duffel bags will help during competitions, both home and away, and during practices. This project is part 7 of 10, for a total of 50 athletic bags.
